Hiking the Red Rocks of Sedona

We’re just back from a week in Sedona, AZ. We’d been there once before, in 1999 with John and Mary Ann on a day trip when we ‘d driven up from Cave Creek, and we’ve always wanted to go back for a longer stay.

On the way down, we stopped overnight in Tehachapi to break up the 11+ hour drive. The next day we were passing through Needles, CA at lunchtime and decided to stop at a supermarket to get sandwiches from their deli. Imagine our surprise – and delight – when we saw they had Lebanon Bologna! As I placed our sandwich orders, Bill walked to the restroom. He came back with a huge smile because on his way, he’d passed a display of Tastykakes! We couldn’t believe our good fortune. So much for a healthy diet when those two Philadelphia delicacies are available!

We arrived at the timeshare right at check-in time (not the best planning, since everyone else had the same idea) but got settled in and went for a walk to check out the resort. Sedona’s scenery is outstanding. It seems that in whichever direction you look, it’s breathtaking.

The red coloring of the rocks is striking, and the springtime foliage and comfortable temperatures made it a very enjoyable time of the year to hike.

There are SO many hiking trails, and the ones we chose were very well-marked.

We enjoyed lunch one day along the shores of Oak Creek. They offered sparkling wine from Gruet, a winery we had visited in Albuquerque. We couldn’t pass it up!

After lunch, we stopped at an overlook for more breathtaking scenic views.

We’re SO glad we decided to return to Sedona. In fact, we want to go again!
