On Feb 20, Bill & I were joined by Melanie, Vernie, Maile, Mason & Kira, along with Vernie’s parents Peggy & Verne. Here are the kids at the airport just outside baggage claim, waiting patiently for the rental car.
For the first 3 nights that they were in Maui, Melanie, Vernie & Kira slept at Peggy & Verne’s condo while Maile and Mason stayed on the sofa bed in the living room of our timeshare.
It worked out great. Of course, the kids awoke early with the time change, so the first morning we went for a walk, had breakfast, went to the beach and swam in the pool all before 9:00! Our morning routine was to get some breakfast and then go exploring. (Maile & Mason’s term for our walks.) We walked through the Marriott grounds and along the Kaanapali beach walk, looking for tropical plants (for example, one morning we counted the number of different colors of hibiscus blossoms), or public art (statues & sculptures), or creatures. (Again, their term.) I have to add here that for our creature search, I thought Maile and Mason would like the tropical birds on display at the neighboring Hyatt resort. Wouldn’t you know, we were there so early that the birds weren’t even on display yet! We were able to see the Hyatt’s penguins and African crowned cranes.) Note: when I was writing this post, I couldn't recall the name of the bird species -- the cranes -- but I suspected Maile might, so I called her and she remembered! I'm amazed at her memory!
The first morning on the beach, I thought maybe we’d stroll along the shore in the sand. (What was I thinking?) There was no way those kids were staying out of the water!
When the rest of the group joined us, we had fun at the pool as well.
One day we all went to Baby Beach (in north Lahaina) for Maile to try snorkeling for the first time. She went out with Vernie, and again with me, and did so well! Bill & I love snorkeling so we’re excited about having our grandchildren join us in doing that!
Meanwhile, the boogie board was a popular item with the non-snorkelers.
Baby Beach proved to be a great place for all of us. Thanks for the suggestion, Verne!
