One morning after our game drive we were treated to a bush breakfast. Note the Masai tribe member is on a cell phone!
After our breakfast, we had the opportunity to visit a Masai village and learn about their culture. They welcomed us with a dance, and encouraged us to join in. Guess who was the first in our group to jump in?
The Masai tribe are probably best known for their ‘jumping dance’ which is performed by the young warriors to impress the ladies. If you watch Amazing Race, you may remember that this dance was featured on one of the episodes. The tribesmen asked for volunteers, and we both just had to do it! First, the demonstration. Notice Bill watching closely.
Now, it’s our turn. The warriors don’t have to worry about us giving them any competition, but it sure was fun!
The women of the village also performed ritual dances and songs for us while some of the little children obediently sat off to the side.
Here’s a better view of one of the homes’ exteriors. The inside of this one is made up of 2 small bedrooms (each one approximately the size of a full-sized bed) plus a tiny cooking area. The walls are made of cow dung.
We learned a lot about the Masai tribe and their way of life. Using our standards they don’t have much, and yet they appear to be very cheerful and content.

Is the guy on the cell phone the leader of the tribe? Do they always wear something containing the color red? What form of transportation do they use? Foot? Cindy, your jump is MUCH more impressive than Bill's!!
No, he wasn't a leader, just one of the warriors. Yes, they all wear red, didn't find out why. Yes, they travel by foot. We think that's why they're all so thin; they walk everywhere! And my jump looks more impressive only because Bill was better at snapping the photo at the right time! :)
