A Ghostly Walk through London

On Saturday we said good bye to the Emerald Princess and hello to London. Once we arrived at our hotel, we quickly unpacked and took a walk around the neighborhood. We found a pub where we grabbed a bite to eat while the locals were watching a soccer game on TV. Funny thing was, even though we’re in London, the game was being broadcast in a language we were unable to identify. Smile

We had arranged for a London Ghost Walk with a meeting time of 7PM. We took the Tube (underground train) to the meeting point, Green Park, which had loads of green lawn chairs set out . . .  and this guy in his green jacket.

As we walked through the park, our tour guide dramatically described mysterious, inexplicable calamities that took place at two haunted trees and a haunted bench. From there, we walked to St. James’s Palace which is haunted by the ghost of the victim of a gruesome murder. Several blocks further along, we heard about a friendly ghost at The Royal Institution of Great Britain.

As it was starting to get dark, we came to #50 Berkeley Square, reputed to be London’s MOST haunted house. After a young girl suffered a terrible death in the attic room, two other people who were staying in that room years later apparently saw her ghost and were so petrified that they jumped to their deaths in the street below. In both cases, the official cause of death is listed as “fright”.

We learned that the Palace at Westminster (where the British houses of Parliament meet) is home to a friendly spirit, while the Tower of London has unfriendly ghosts – not surprising since it was used for torture and beheadings!

The ghost walk was a lot of fun. Neither Bill or I can say we’re convinced any of these ghosts exist, but it was an entertaining way to spend an evening and work off those fish & chips.
