Cindy and I left California in search of older relics then us and we found them. Our first stop was Dinosaur National Monument. This monument or park straddles the Utah Colorado border.
See, what did I tell you - one fossil in search of older fossils!
Cindy and I each found a bone to bring home to our dog. Oh wait, we don’t have a dog. I guess we will have to leave them.
These dino bones were on display at the visitors center at the entrance to the Utah side of the monument. We traveled up the hill to the Carnegie Quarry where you can see the bones still imbedded in the rocks of the cliff.
museum building built over the quarry dinosaur vertebrae imbedded in the rock
large femur bones still in the rocks (each one three to four feet long, should have had Cindy stand next to them )
After we left the quarry and dig site we took a short hike through the area to see the Indian Rock Art (Petroglyphs and Pictographs)
Rock art, yeah right. I’m going with early American graffiti. See what happens when you give the kids too much time off! After we left the ART the trip went to the dogs.
PRARIE DOGS that is
The next morning we headed out for the Colorado side of the monument. The entrance is about 45 miles from the Utah entrance. There are no dinosaur bones in this side but it does have some fantastic scenery. I would say just as nice as the Grand Canyon only on a smaller scale.
This hike we went on was about a mile and a half in from the parking area. It is well worth the effort. It is where the Green and the Yampa rivers join up to make the Green that flows into the Colorado river. The photos of course do not do it justice. After this we headed back to our hotel to rest up for our drive to Breckenridge CO the next day.
