For our last day in Montreal, we chose a self-guided walking tour of Mount Royal Park which is situated on a hill just behind downtown. We hoped to be finished before the rain started, but took along the umbrella just in case. Good thing we did!
The walk begins with steps
which lead to a choice: more steep steps or a wide, gradually sloping bridle path. We mixed it up, doing some of each.
By the time we got to the top of the hill, the rain was falling steadily and Bill ‘swam’ across the terrace overlook.
But I didn’t let a little rain stop me from reading the narrative from the Frommer’s guidebook!
After Bill took that photo of me, he swiveled around and captured this view of the city and the St. Lawrence River below.
We continued on another 10 minutes to the summit, to see the cross which is lit up every night and can be seen for miles. Legend has it that the original wooden cross was placed in that spot in 1643 after the young colony survived a flood threat.
Fortunately the rain stopped on our descent, which went much quicker than the climb had!
We had enjoyed our walk in the park, but decided to give ourselves a break and take the Metro back to our hotel. Look what we spotted at the Metro station. (This is to make you jealous, Heather!)
