24 Hours and still going

We arrived in Beijing at noon on Tuesday (9pm Monday CA. time).  Our flight from Hong Kong added an additional 1278 miles to our travels today.  When we took off from Hong Kong Cindy snapped a few photos from the air.

As you can see it was quite hazy when we took off and we couldn’t get any real clear shots.  We hope that on the day our ship visits Hong Kong the weather will be good and the visibility much better.

Our flight into Beijing was delayed from landing for over a half hour.  The pilot advised us that there was some kind of military restriction in place causing us to circle the airport before we could land.  We could see the runways and no planes were taking off or landing.  We were happy it was only a short delay and we got our feet firmly on the ground for the rest of the day.

Our hotel is the Marriott City Wall in downtown Beijing.  The city once had a wall surrounding the old city and it was ordered to be taken down by Mao in the 1960’s so they could expand and modernize the city. Our hotel sits next to a section of the old city wall reconstructed to show how the wall appeared before Mao’s orders.

The photo on the right shows the old city wall with our hotel behind the wall.

On the way in from the airport the tour guide on the bus was telling us that Bei means north and Jing means capital, so this was originally the capital of the North part of China.  Our hotel is right down the street from the main train station in Beijing and still most of the people in China travel by train.  So the station is quite busy 7 days a week.

The building is quite large and the people waiting for their trains have large bundles of their belongs to load on the train.  Well the lack of sleep is catching up to me.  I’d better end for now.
