Today we took another trip that I had arranged before we left home, but today it was by bus, not bike. We had 3 places of interest to visit. First up, about an hour out of central London was Windsor Castle, the official residence of the royal family. We’re told that the Queen spends most weekends there except for the summer. It was quite impressive! Even the lamps were fit for the royals.
Another couple hours’ drive took us to the impressive city of Bath. Founded by the Romans over 1,000 years ago, the entire city is a World Heritage Site. The “circus” in the center of town consists of curved residences built around a central, circular park. Due to the heritage site designation, no changes may be made to the exteriors, including repainting the from doors or upgrading to energy-efficient windows. Our guide named some famous people who’ve lived there, the most recent being Nicholas Cage.
When we got to the Roman Baths, we saw the original hot spring that feeds the baths, plus many excavations of artifacts from the Roman times. In the photo below, Bill is listening to the audioguide, not talking on the phone!
Our third stop was fascinating Stonehenge, dating back to prehistoric times. Its exact purpose is unknown to this day. While we were there, the cloudy skies seemed to add to the mysterious atmosphere.
We had another long, but rewarding day. When we got back to the hotel tonight, the doorman asked us if London was treating us well. Bill’s answer was “London is wearing us out!” We wouldn’t have it any other way.
