Thursday morning before breakfast we headed over to Lawai Beach, one of our favorite snorkeling spots which is just past Poipu Beach Park. The conditions were perfect! (In the photo below, that’s The Beach House restaurant in the background, one of the best places to watch the sunset on Kauai. It’s only open for dinner so during the day they let people set up their beach chairs and spread their towels under the shade of the palm trees --- very pleasant!)
We saw loads of fish. It was one of those times that we felt like we were in the middle of a fishbowl. Heather and Taki left their underwater camera with us and we had fun, taking way too many photos! Here are just a few. This first shot will give you a glimpse of the number of fish; there are at least four different varieties here.
Here’s Heather’s favorite, the moorish idol, and a multi-colored wrasse.
This last one is Hawaii’s state fish. The first time we vacationed in Kauai, Vernie taught us its Hawaiian name: humuhumuhukunukuapua’a!
When we got back to the timeshare for breakfast, we opened the door and couldn’t believe our eyes. Apparently Baby was mad that we hadn’t taken her along with us. She gave us no choice but to put her in time out.
While Baby served her punishment in the time out chair, Bill and I decided to brave the surf at Shipwreck Beach. Despite the ever-present red flags, we deemed it safe enough to try body surfing, just like we did ‘down the shore’ in New Jersey when we were growing up. The conditions were unusually calm for Shipwreck; this is only the second time we’ve ever gone in the water there.
What an exhilarating day!
