On the Road Again

Here we are on the road again enjoying a new adventure but before we start our cruise we spent a week renewing old friendships and reminiscing and visiting places from our youth.   Since we live in California our first reminder from the past is a freeway sign --- on the east coast, it isn’t really a FREEway.East Coast Fall Vacation 2010 001

We spent our first night in PA (Pennsylvania) having dinner with some good friends.  Our plans were to meet them at Bowman’s Tavern in New Hope PA.  Since it has been over twenty-five years since we have been to New Hope we put in the address for the restaurant in our trusty GPS and off we went. New Hope is along the Delaware River and about a 35 minute drive from where we were staying at Cindy’s sister’s.  When we got to River Road the GPS told us to turn left and head up the river.  I was thinking that New Hope was the other way but what do I know it’s been a long time and how could I know more than the new modern technology!  So off we go, and twenty some miles later the GPS announces that we have arrived at our destination.  We were more or less at a wide spot in the road a long distance from New Hope.  Long story longer I turned around and we met up with our friends only 15 minutes late for dinner. Our 35 minute drive took us 75 minutes.  I guess the satellites don’t reach PA.

Next we headed to Dover Delaware to visit Joe Biden but he wasn’t there so we stopped and visited with my sister and brother-in-law.  My sister is always up for a new adventure and suggested we rent bikes and ride around Cape Henlopen park near Lewes Delaware.

So we drove to the park about 45 minutes from their house and got on the bikes.  The only problem was we arrived at 2:50 PM and the bikes had to be returned by 3 PM.  So we had a grueling ten minute bike ride!

We did go to the beach after the bike ride. I want to point out to those Hawaii fans that below is a WHITE sand beach. Here we are watching some dolphins swim by.

After our trip to the beach we drove down to the seaside town of Rehoboth and walked on the BOARD walk.  Please note you Santa Cruz boardwalk lovers!

My sister Mary and niece Sarah drove over from their home in Maryland to join us for dinner, and it was great seeing them again.

Cindy spent two evenings with some old friends from her grade school and friends from her days at the Warrington swim club, and thoroughly enjoyed catching up with them.

For the first time in about 25 years, we also made it to Cindy’s Grammy Lear’s Picnic which used to be a birthday celebration for her grandmother but is more of a family reunion now. It was great seeing aunts, uncles and cousins, including her cousin Rick, who was my friend growing up and introduced Cindy & I when we were teenagers. He was the best man at our wedding 39 years ago!

This has been a great start to our East Coast trip.
