Baker Tank Trail without rain

Remember the trail I got lost on looking for the ghost town, well we decided to try it again and hike it to the Baker Tank and not get lost.

The trailhead is at 10,000 feet and the trail climbs 1,160 feet. So the highest point of the trail is at 11,160 feet. As you hike you can really feel the effect of the altitude on your breathing.

The first mile to mile and a half you gain most of the altitude and it is the steepest part of the trail. During this part of the hike we passed two men on horseback, several people on bikes and several people running the trail. They ran by me as I stood there gasping for breath!

We also found a memorial for Koa, someone's favorite hiking companion.

Lessons learned from our last hike in this area

Always check the map to make sure you are on the right trail!

See I knew we were on the right trail all the time.

As you can see the tank was used to refill the steam engines after they climbed the long grade to the top of the pass.

We found the perfect spot to have our lunch before we headed back.

On our way back to the trailhead (almost all downhill) we ran into a family of three who were huffing and puffing up the first section of trail and it made me feel good knowing I wasn't the only one gasping for breath coming up that section.
