It all began with this ad in the local paper:
It sounded like something we'd both enjoy, so we loaded the bikes onto the Santa Fe and headed for Frisco, about 9 miles from Breckenridge. We met up with the guide and about a dozen others in the post office parking lot and got ready to go. The weather was perfect!
We rode less than 5 minutes before arriving at the first mine entrance, followed by several others in the next 2 hours. For safety reasons, all of the mine entrances were blocked either by grates or debris.
All along the way, we learned interesting facts about mining and its history in the area. For example, when the mine tailings are reddish colored, the mine was producing gold or copper. Grey tailings indicate silver or lead. In this photo, you can see traces of both.
We also saw a cave where the miners stored their supply of "black powder ", used for blasting into the mountain.
We both agreed that it was a beautiful morning spent in the great outdoors.
