Alicante, the Antioch of Spain

P1020770

Spain -- our tenth country on this trip.  Above is a photo of our ship in the port at Alicante, Spain.  The weather was quite warm with low humidity.  The weather reminded us of the weather we get in Antioch in the summer.

We took a Princess tour today of the village of Guadalest and the old  part of the city of Alicante.

The village of Guadalest was built by the Moors during the 700 years that they occupied Spain.  The name of the village means river to the east in the Arab language.  You can see in the photo the top of a fortress guard tower and a bell tower in front of it.  The fortress was built by the Moors and when the Spanish drove them out of Spain they built a catholic church within the fortress.

Back in Alicante we visited the fortress of Santa Barbara which overlooks the city and port of Alicante and the Mediterranean Sea. I think this would be a great place to build a beach house!

Oh I forgot to mention on our way to the village we stopped at a little gift shop where they passed out samples of Moscatel wine and fresh orange juice.

Flat Mary Ann had so many samples of Moscatel that she just passed out.

We next toured Alicante and finished up on their Esplanade (the longest one in Europe).

I also had to sample some of the local ice cream favorite, “Turron”.  It tasted great almost like peanut butter ice cream. Turron probably means ground lizard tongue!
