Galway and a day of leisure

Our B&B host Jim, here in Salt Hill suggested we take the day and visit the city of Galway, a 20 minute bus ride from where we were staying. So off we go to Galway.

Our first stop was at Eyre Square. President John F. Kennedy spoke here in June 1963, just five months before he was assassinated.

Cindy is standing next to a memorial dedicated to Kennedy. The park was officially named John F. Kennedy Park but no one calls it that. It's still known as 'the square'.

The old city was once walled in but that was torn down in the 1400's. There are only two places where the wall can be seen. The photo above is of the rebuilt wall that is inside of a shopping mall. It was rebuilt on the foundation of the original wall.

Here is the second place where the wall still stands, down by the river. This is the original wall. The black tarp you see by the end of the wall is actually a barrier set up to prevent the river from flooding the city. On a normal high tide the river comes within six inches of the top of the river bank, but on full moon high tides it tends to come higher and flood out part of the city.

The next few views are of the city as it is today.

As you can see we had light rain today. This is the first rain we hit since we arrived in Ireland. Many people have told us the weather has better this past week than it was all summer.

We did find a nice pub to get into out of the rain and have lunch. The door and the windows on that wall are slanted, not me.

We had a great relaxing day touring the city and headed back to our B&B to get our wash.

I guess you are wondering how we do our wash since we will be gone for six weeks. Well, it was rather easy here in Ireland. We dropped it off at a launderette this morning and picked it up this evening before dinner. All that had to be done was sorting and refolding to fit in our suitcase. So I think we are good for another three weeks.
